That represented 25% of the total of 484,447 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article compares census numbers before and after the Civil War. Before this, people who were not white were not named in the federal census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1850, there was a box to enter color on the census. There were three categories: white, black, and mulatto. The third term is the language of the time, and I will use mixed in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are researching your black Young ancestors in census archives, be sure to check the two non-white categories. Do not assume that the people recording the information were always correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1850_Federal_Census\"><\/span>1850 Federal Census<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><b>There were 902 people named Young who were recorded as black in the 1850 census. 410 were recorded as mixed.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because they are in the main federal census, we know that they were free citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a total of 47,571 free citizens named Young that year. All African Americans were included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who were omitted in 1850 and 1860 because they were enslaved were now recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>15,231 people named Young were recorded in the 1870 census as black and 2,095 as mixed.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a total of 92,500 people with the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Young_In_The_1900_And_1940_Census\"><\/span>Young In The 1900 And 1940 Census<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mixed category was dropped in 1900, so we just need to look at the black numbers this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The 1900 census recorded 33,625 people with the last name Young as black within a total of 162,920 that year.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, the mixed category returned in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. It was dropped again in 1930, but replaced with extra categories for colored and non-white in a way that seems confusing now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This changed again in 1940 and we can simply focus on one black category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The 1940 census recorded 46,264 people named Young as black within a total of 257,618.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historic_Black_Figures\"><\/span>Historic Black Figures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Young.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here are some notable African American people in history with Young as their last name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Charles_Young\"><\/span>Charles Young<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Born: 1864<\/li><li>From: Mays Lick, Kentucky<\/li><li>Died: 1922<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Charles Young\u2019s father escaped from slavery in 1865 by fleeing to Ohio and joining a black regiment in the Civil War. This allowed him to secure the freedom of his wife and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young Charles was mentored by a black Ohio abolitionist named John Parker to complete his schooling. Charles took the entry exam for West Point Academy in 1883.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He faced plenty of discrimination as a cadet but graduated with a commission as 2nd lieutenant in 1889. Much of his 28 years of service was with the small number of black regiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1903, Charles supervised the Sequoia and General Grant National Parks, becoming the first black superintendent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 1916, Charles held the rank of Major when he led the 10th U.S. Cavalry in a charge against Pancho Villa\u2019s forces in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel for his efforts. He became the first African American to attain the rank of Colonel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, the U.S. Department of Defense gave Young <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/413919\/ky-native-charles-young-posthumously-promoted-bg-us-army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an honorary promotion<\/a> to Brigadier General.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/charles-young.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/charles-young.jpg 500w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/charles-young-250x300.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More firsts for historic African Americans<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some more black men and women who were pioneers in their fields:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/gray-surname-in-black-history\/#Ida_Gray\">Ida Gray<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/miller-surname-in-black-history\/#Maria_Miller\">Maria Miller<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/taylor-surname-in-black-history\/#Preston_Taylor\">Preston Taylor<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wright-surname-in-black-history\/#Theodore_Wright\">Theodore Wright<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roger_Young\"><\/span>Roger Young<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Born: 1889<\/li><li>From: Clifton Forge, Virginia<\/li><li>Died: 1964<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Roger Arliner Young (a woman) enrolled at Howard University in 1916 to study music but started studying science in 1921. She received a masters from the University of Chicago in 1926.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went to the University of Pennsylvania where she earned her PhD in 1940. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was the first black woman to be awarded a PhD in the field of zoology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Young_In_Black_Military_Records\"><\/span>Young In Black Military Records<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Military records are a rich resource of for family history research. Here are examples of the Young surname from three different military services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Black civil war sailors<\/li><li>Buffalo soldiers<\/li><li>Tuskegee airmen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Buffalo_Soldiers\"><\/span>Buffalo Soldiers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/1918-Tenth-Cavalry-Soldiers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/1918-Tenth-Cavalry-Soldiers.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/1918-Tenth-Cavalry-Soldiers-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Five regiments for black soldiers were formed during the Civil War. They were known as the Buffalo Soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their records are part of the national archive of military monthly returns. The information includes the year and place of birth, where they enlisted, their occupation, and their height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest military entries for Young was in October 1867. David Young was a Recruit in the Tenth Cavalry. He was stationed in October 1867 at Boston, Massachussetts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the later entries was in November 1914. Robert Young was a Cook in the Ninth Cavalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are researching military ancestors, there is a free index of these records on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/search\/collections\/1934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ancestry.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FamilySearch.org.<\/a> You have to create an account on either website, but you do not need to pay for the Buffalo Soldiers archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Black_Civil_War_Sailors\"><\/span>Black Civil War Sailors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Parks Service has a free archive of African American sailors during the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information includes their age, height, rank, occupation, and where and when they enlisted. It also includes every ship that they served on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can search the database on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/civilwar\/search-sailors.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Parks website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hezekiah Young<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest entries for Young was for Hezekiah Young from Charleston, South Carolina. He enlisted in December 1862 at New York when he was aged 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record shows that Hezekiah was assigned on July 1863 to the ship Lackawanna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His occupation before enlisting was as a Jeweller. His naval rank was 1st Class Boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>&#8220;1st Class Boy&#8221; was the rank given to young men who enlisted when they were under eighteen.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daniel Young<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the later entries was for a sailor who enlisted at Philadelphia in December 1864. Daniel was aged 30 and was from Charleston, South Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was assigned to the ship Suwanee on February 1865.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His occupation before enlisting was as a Laborer. His naval rank was Landsman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>&#8220;Landsman&#8221; was the lowest rank at the time and was given to recruits with little sea experience.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tuskegee_Airmen\"><\/span>Tuskegee Airmen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Tuskegee-Airmen-Squadron.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Tuskegee-Airmen-Squadron.jpg 600w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Tuskegee-Airmen-Squadron-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The Tuskegee Airmen were military personnel who served at the Tuskegee Army Airfield or related programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly one thousand black pilots graduated from the Tuskegee Institute. The photograph above (from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/resource\/cph.3b34943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Library of Congress<\/a>) shows a class in session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They flew single-engine fighter planes or twin-engine bombers. 352 fought in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albert Young graduated from the Tuskegee Institute in March 1944. He qualified as a fighter pilot. Albert was from Memphis, Tennessee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William Young came from Oberlin, Ohio.
