That represented 22% of the total of 190,667 entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article tracks their numbers in the census since the Civil War. In 1850 and 1860, only free African Americans were recorded in the census. The many enslaved were omitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1870 onward, all black Americans were included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>6,174 people named Gibson were recorded in the 1870 census as black and 915 as mixed.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a total of 33,269 people with the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gibson_In_The_1900_And_1940_Census\"><\/span>Gibson In The 1900 And 1940 Census<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The mixed category was dropped from the census in 1900, so we just need to look at the black numbers this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The 1900 census recorded 11,978 people with the last name Gibson as black within a total of 58,714 that year.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the way, the mixed category returned in the 1910 and 1920 censuses. It was dropped again in 1930, but replaced with extra categories for colored and non-white in a way that seems confusing now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This changed again in 1940 and we can simply focus on one black category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The 1940 census recorded 17,583 people named Gibson as black within a total of 99,468.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historic_Black_Figures_With_The_Gibson_Surname\"><\/span>Historic Black Figures With The Gibson Surname<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-rounded\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Gibson-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Gibson-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Gibson-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Gibson-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Gibson.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some notable African Americans in history with Gibson as their last name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mary_Gibson\"><\/span>Mary Gibson<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Born: 1854<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From: Mississippi<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Died: 1952<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary Keys was born into slavery in 1854 on a Mississippi plantation. Her family moved to Texas after emancipation where she married the Reverend Franklin Gibson. The couple settled in Fort Worth where they founded an Episcopalian church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gibson worked as a midwife in the town. As the nursing colleges in Texas did not accept African Americans, Gibson pursued a nursing degree by correspondence. She graduated in 1907. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 53-year-old was the first black accredited nurse in the South. To put that into perspective, California&#8217;s first registered black nurse was in 1946 (the mother of <a href=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/taylor-surname-in-black-history\/#John_Taylor-2\">John Taylor<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gibson spent her long life working to improve nursing standards and to desegregate the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benjamin_Gibson\"><\/span>Benjamin Gibson<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Born: 1931<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From: Safford, Alabama<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Died: 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Benjamin Gibson grew up in Detroit and graduated from high school when he was only sixteen. He spent a couple of years in the army and then pursued a degree in accounting. Gibson worked as an accountant while studying law at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he qualified as a lawyer, Gibson moved to Lansing (the state capital) in 1961 to become an Assistant Attorney General. He also started a successful private practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Jimmy Carter appointed him as District Court Judge for the Western District of Michigan in 1979. He was the first black judge in the Western District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gibson_In_Black_Military_Records\"><\/span>Gibson In Black Military Records<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Buffalo-Soldiers-Virginia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-679\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Military records are a rich resource of for family history research. Here are examples of the Gibson surname from three different military services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Buffalo soldiers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Black civil war sailors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tuskegee airmen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Buffalo_Soldiers\"><\/span>Buffalo Soldiers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Five regiments for black soldiers were formed during the Civil War. They were known as the Buffalo Soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their records are part of the national archive of military monthly returns. The information includes the year and place of birth, where they enlisted, their occupation, and their height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest military entries for Gibson was in August 1867. James W Gibson was a Recruit in the Tenth Cavalry. He was stationed in August 1867 at Fort Riley (Kansas) and Indianapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the later entries was in February 1914. Van Gibson was a Private in the Tenth Cavalry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are researching military ancestors, there is a free index of these records on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/search\/collections\/1934\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ancestry.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FamilySearch.org.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to create an account on either website, but you do not need to pay for the Buffalo Soldiers archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Black_Civil_War_Sailors\"><\/span>Black Civil War Sailors<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Parks Service has a free archive of African American sailors during the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information includes their age, height, rank, occupation, and where and when they enlisted. It also includes every ship that they served on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can search the database on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/civilwar\/search-sailors.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Parks website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lewis Gibson<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the earliest entries for Gibson was for Lewis Gibson from Baltimore, Maryland. He enlisted in December 13 1860 at New York when he was aged 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The record shows that Lewis was assigned on April 1 1863 to the ship St. Marys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His occupation before enlisting was as a Barkeeper. His naval rank was Landsman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>&#8220;Landsman&#8221; was the lowest rank at the time and was given to recruits with little sea experience.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Andrew Gibson<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the later entries was for a sailor who enlisted at Covington\/White River in July 9 1863. Andrew was aged 25 and was from Adams Co., Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was assigned to the ship Covington on March 31 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His occupation before enlisting was as a Fieldhand. His naval rank was 1st Class Boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>&#8220;1st Class Boy&#8221; was the rank given to young men who enlisted when they were under eighteen.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tuskegee_Airmen\"><\/span>Tuskegee Airmen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/exploreblackheritage.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Tuskegee-Airmen-Squadron.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tuskegee Airmen were military personnel who served at the Tuskegee Army Airfield or related programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly one thousand black pilots graduated from the Tuskegee Institute. They flew single-engine fighter planes or twin-engine bombers. 352 fought in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John Gibson graduated from the Tuskegee Institute in October 1942. He qualified as a fighter pilot.
